PODCAST #038:Interview with Masaki Matsumoto

Coach Masaki Matsumoto was born in Japan, but grew up in Seattle, WA and attended King's High School and played for Jim Shapiro (Episode #007).  After graduating from high school, Coach Matsumoto received a scholarship to play football at Trinity International University in Chicago, IL.  He went onto receive his Bachelor's degree in Physical Education & Health and eventually, received his Master's degree in Special Education.  

He started his first teaching job at Bernstein High School in Los Angeles, CA in

After four seasons, he took over a struggling football program at Bernstein and turned it around.  In his three seasons as the Head Coach at Bernstein, his teams reached the playoffs all three seasons and made it to the semifinals in his last two seasons.  He was awarded the 2013 Central League Coach of the Year, 2013 L.A. Times Coach of the Year, 2016, 2017, and 2019.  Pierce County League Coach of the Year.   Bernstein's 2014 football team was also featured on an ESPN E60 episode for their accomplishments on and off the field.  

Coach Matsumoto arrived at Lincoln in April of 2015 and just completed his fourth season with the Abes.  His overall record as a head coach is 75-20 in 8 seasons with 7 league titles.
